The significant decline in mangrove cover along the Semarang coast over the past decade, as revealed by the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) in 2025, prompted PT Telkom Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (Telkom) to take an active role in coastal ecosystem rehabilitation efforts. Through the AYO BERAKSI program, Telkom recently held a mangrove planting campaign at the Semarang Mangrove Center (SMC). This activity involved 13 of its best employee volunteers as a tangible contribution to the company's support for environmental restoration and abrasion risk mitigation.
The AYO BERAKSI program is an internal volunteer competition designed to encourage active employee participation in providing solutions to various social and environmental challenges. Through a multi-stage selection process, five Best of the Best teams were selected: AiDareU, INOVAKSI, Green Drop, MAKE Impact, and BATUMBUAH, who then participated in a series of conservation activities in Semarang.
Telkom's Senior General Manager of Social Responsibility, Hery Susanto, stated that employee involvement in this activity is part of the company's commitment to delivering sustainable social impact. "As a leading digital telco company, Telkom is not only focused on service development and technological transformation, but also committed to making a real contribution to society and the environment. Through this activity, we hope that mangrove planting can help mitigate the impacts of climate change and protect coastal areas from the threat of abrasion," said Hery.
BRIN data also shows that mangrove degradation has the potential to weaken their ecological function as natural coastline protectors and blue carbon sinks. This condition not only increases the risk of abrasion but also threatens the sustainability of coastal ecosystems. Therefore, cross-sector collaboration is key to ensuring the restoration process is carried out in a measured and sustainable manner.
During the three-day program, volunteers planted mangrove seedlings as part of coastal rehabilitation efforts, educated elementary school students on the importance of environmental protection, and participated in batik training using natural mangrove-based dyes to support waste reduction around the SMC. This series of activities reflects the integration of employees' innovative spirit and social awareness in supporting environmental sustainability.
As part of the implementation of Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL), this initiative aligns with the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically Goal 13 on Climate Change Management and Goal 14 on Marine Ecosystems. Going forward, Telkom will continue to strengthen collaboration in driving environmental philanthropy, supporting the restoration of national coastal ecosystems, and making tangible contributions that strengthen environmental resilience for future generations.
